  1. When the world melancholy was replaced by the word depression, an entire world of feeling was lost.
  2. The Golden Age of Hollywood represents a synthesis of European humanism (thanks to Central European artists and intellectuals fleeing Hitler) and American industriousness. The petty, small, highly-calculated Hollywood of today bears no resemblance to the Hollywood of the past.
  3. A dramatist is harder to find than a novelist or poet or filmmaker. A dramatist is a snow leopard.
  4. When we eliminate the time and space — the conditions — for contemplation, we eliminate the conditions under which art may have an audience.
  5. Art is not truth, it is the feeling of truth.
