Diary of a Plague Year

The shock of difference has been lost to modern cognition; we have become collectively insensitive to magnitudes of difference — disruptions in the character and texture of life itself.

Sovereignty is created through crisis — and nothing else.

Certainly, if we really cared about the very elderly, we’d spend more time with them, not isolate them more than they already are.

The lockdowners are so many Robespierres: enacting their rationalistic, high-minded goals with the grim, deterministic logic of the hangman.

Ask yourself whether you really believe in the politics of your chosen party, or if you just enjoy the good feelings that come from tribal identification.

We’ve replaced duty with liability; tenderness with safety.
