“The metaphysics of light maintains itself [in writing],” writes the literary critic Geoffrey Hartman. I write to maintain contact with that light, that metaphysical intuition. I do not understand the fear of writing, writer’s block — I only understand the fear of not writing; the fear of Being un-metaphysical. If I have an essence, I only make it truly essential by examining it — that essence — and I do so with what I write. I can only assume that each day, the world sets a new record for the written word; for generated text — but that does not mean that collectively, we are writing better, or writing at all. Generating is the right word: we are generating instead of writing. So I write too, in order not to generate; I write to choose writing, rather than to be chosen by writing.
