  1. From USA Today: “In Georgia, the NAACP has filed a complaint that some voters’ choices of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams have been switched to her opponent, Republican Brian Kemp.”
  2. Our duty as citizens goes far beyond voting this November: it extends into the rest of our lives. I tried to make this point recently, or at least allude to it , and the result was one of my least popular posts ever. We want to believe that a symbolic act can change the world, but really — we have to change ourselves. We have to be better.
  3. We live in a dangerously fractured society — which is to say: no society at all. It is bad enough that really anyone can be military-style assault rifles, but we don’t ask enough: why are there so many people who want to buy military-style assault rifles?
  4. From the NYTimes: “The social media site has become a haven for neo-Nazis, white nationalists and other extremists. It won’t change its policies, its founder says.” Does it surprise anyone that extremists won’t denounce violence?
  5. Reading about frightening events doesn’t necessarily make you a more informed citizen. Pick up the phone — call relatives and friends in other parts of the country. Or get in the car and drive to places you’ve never been. Talk to people. Get out of your bubble, draw your own conclusions.
  6. If you know someone who owns a gun, just ask them why. Be persistent.
  7. I have a white supremacist family member — a very well-respected surgeon. I have no doubt, that, given the opportunity, based on my conversations with him, he would participate in a genocide. For every maniac who shoots up a church or a school — there are a hundred or a thousand silent sympathizers, rationally waiting for their moment.
