Notes on American Politics

  1. If we measure the progress of civilization by the complexity of the language, the syntax, it uses, then our civilization is in very, very poor shape.
  2. Language is waning, advertising — image — waxing. Future politics will be conducted entirely in well crafted ideograms.
  3. There are no real liberals or conservatives, there are just ideologues, performing roles. Real liberals or conservatives are real people: they change their minds, they exchange DNA, they debate, they leave room for interpretation. Today’s politics has none of that: it’s just two, over-determined sides, not listening.
  4. Personal qualities matter more than policy. We chastised Obama for being too liberal or too conservative, but what we didn’t appreciate was that he was deliberate and thoughtful. We see the consequences of having a policy extremist — and a stupid fucking person — in office now. We only miss moderates once they’re gone.
