  1. Conservatism without liberalism is blind; liberalism without conservatism is empty.
  2. The best politics is planting billions of trees — now.
  3. Like perfect justice, the music of J.S. Bach is full of symmetry.
  4. The states of the former confederacy still harbor the mythical belief that they are the true America. This mythical belief is like a rodent rotting behind a wall, stinking up the whole house.
  5. Stupidity is easily manipulated. It is better to be intelligently wrong than stupidly right — at least intelligence can adapt.
  6. If climate change kills vast swaths of life on earth, we couldn’t really say the project of modern civilization — science, technology, industry, nations — was a success, could we?
  7. Why is it so hard to ask governments not to take catastrophic risks for the sake of some transcendental idea or cause?
  8. It’s hard not to distrust anyone who wants to be president.
  9. There are only two types of presidents in American history: perfect (Lincoln) and flawed (the rest). The difference is simply that Lincoln kept his soul alive, and remained a man as president — the rest just became ‘Presidents’, played the part.
