deeper the blue becomes the more strongly it calls man towards the infi­nite awak­ening in him a desire for the pure and finally for the super­nat­ural the artist brings different facets of his troubles into a single canvas poverty dejection creative anguish and grief for those lost colors follow the changes of the emotions I wish for my subjects to escape their fate and occupy a state of grace what is true what persists and must persist is buried and pushes back through only gradually in moment like shadows passing through a garden fence in flickering bars a small paper-cut on my forefinger reminds me that I have a nervous system working all the time that in short this living thing can suffer and be suffered
