  1. Without a sense of the divine, we’re left fishing for importance, for relevance, in the wrong pool — ourselves.
  2. The split between atheism and theism to me now seems obsolete; all that’s left is the split between those whose passion for life is dead, and those for whom it is still living.
  3. When nothing is sublime, then nothing is alive — to you.
  4. Everything has to be a part of a creative endeavor to join with something higher unless… there is nothing higher — and then what? This is the thought process that stops most people from being creative.
  5. Modernity began — historically speaking — yesterday. Whether you mark the beginning of modernity with the enlightenment or Ibsen or Einstein or Steve Jobs, it was yesterday; it was all such a short time ago in the wider scope of things. Simply: we have no idea yet, how to live, as individuals, apart from the primordial tribe, the primordial rules, the primordial ideas.
  6. I no longer recognize the terms political and conservative — those seem to me, like everything else in American life, to be brands, not authentic categories of political belief.
