Subway Diary 22

I see little distinction between a cult and a corporation. A corporation produces beliefs, rituals, culture. I see little difference between culture and cult. When I see earbuds and screens on the subway, as Netflix is being pumped into various brains, I see the corporatization and thus the cultification of culture.

Art is something we can choose. Entertainment chooses us.

It seems that the standard of a meaningful life is slipping. It’s hard to say why; I have a hard time justifying this statement — yet I feel certain of it. It just seems to me that un-realities are getting too good (I refuse to call them virtual realities).

Why we should strive when there’s so much to do on our phones; our intentions to do better are always defeated by the ease with which we can do what we’ve always been doing, by the ease with which we can turn away from reality, tune into addictive distraction.

An idea: what if we vowed to never say anything that couldn’t stand as the last thing we ever say, never do anything that couldn’t stand as the last thing we ever do?
