The last two days have finally been below freezing in New York — which feels good; I took a run today and that felt good too. It feels good to feel the body and to remind the mind that it’s embodied. When I get on the train and see the Airpods with their glazed-over looks and automatic thumbs, I feel glad that I can feel sore muscles and have an active — ish — mind. Lately, I’ve been inviting friends to play chess as often as possible; I carry around a mini-set I got for my birthday. Why? Chess requires focus and silence, but also another person — in person (thus I have no use for online chess, which strikes me as counterproductive). It’s a tiny thing — playing chess — but homeopathic treatments only ever require microdoses to produce an effect. Chinese doctors want to make the immune system less apathetic; philosophers, I think, — now more than ever — ought want to make the soul less apathetic.
